Richard A. Barney


Mr. Richard A. Barney, 83, of Johnstown and Caroga Lake, N.Y., passed away on Tuesday, September 25, 2007 at his home, after a long illness. He was born April 29, 1924, in Brooklyn, N.Y., the son of Kerson and Alice Blaber Barney. He graduated from Boys High School in Brooklyn, N.Y. and Williams College, where he was a star baseball pitcher. He also graduated from St. John’s School of Law. He began his career as a teller at Chase Manhattan Bank in New York City and rose in the bank to become vice president of the Trust Dept., retiring in 1983. He was a member of the Bay Ridge U. Methodist Church and served many years on the Board of Trustees. Mr. Barney was a member of the N.Y. State Bar Assoc., a former member of the Johnstown Moose and was an avid golfer. On May 3, 1947, he married the former Jane Ostrander and she passed away in 1999. He is survived by a daughter, Ellen B. Wright of Manchester Center, Vt.; a son, Robert K. Barney of Moodus, Ct.; a brother, Wayne Barney of Johnstown; and a sister, Janet Thomas of Salisbury, N.C. He is also survived by six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild, nieces, nephews and cousins. A private funeral service will be held at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are by the Ehle Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to Mt. Valley Hospice, 108 Steele Ave., Gloversville, N.Y. 12078. 

Thomas W. Bleyl ‘Pops’


Mr. Thomas W. Bleyl “Pops,” 54, of Gloversville, died Tuesday at Bassett Health Care Facility in Cooperstown. Mr. Bleyl was born May 30, 1953 in Trenton, N.J., the son of the late Thomas E. and Arlene M. Parks Bleyl. He was educated in Gloversville schools and served in the Marine Corps. Mr. Bleyl was a stay-at-home dad. He enjoyed riding his bike and sitting on the bench at the four corners where he observed nature and society. He is survived by his wife, JoAnn Parkhurst Bleyl of Gloversville, whom he married March 8, 1974. He is also survived by his children, Thomas W. Bleyl (Tonya Ellis), Patricia Bleyl, Anna Bleyl (Joel Sanderfan), Melissa Coty, Timothy Eagan, Steven Olsen, all of Gloversville, William Olsen Sr. of Johnstown, Ryan Bailey of Troy, Kristy Daum of Meco and Jennifer Weaver of Amsterdam. Mr. Bleyl is additionally survived by a sister, Marie Ellis (William) of Cornersville, TN; two brothers, William Port and Joseph Taylor, both of Gloversville; six grandsons; eight granddaughters (“Poppy, we love you a bushel and a peck”); nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a granddaughter, Tashina L. Bailey.

Ronald C. Rivenberg Sr., age 59, of Amsterdam, passed away on Thursday September 27, 2007, after a brief illness.
